Serving North Olmsted, Strongsville, Beachwood & Cleveland, OH

The world of 2-seat convertibles exists to bring a smile to a driver’s (and one lucky passenger’s) face. Maximum grin-power is generated by the 2018 Porsche Boxster and the Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster. These open-air sports cars offer tremendous performance and thrilling handling, not to mention prestige, luxury and style. Drive both and compare prices – we’re pretty sure you’ll pick the Porsche and pocket the savings, or spend it on a week in Paris!

Performance

The new 2018 Boxster GTS has an MSRP of $81,900, which is $7,295 less than the cheapest SL, the SL450. Yet the Boxster delivers 365 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, good for 0-to-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds. Compare with the SL450, with 362 horsepower, 369 lb-ft and a 4.9-second 0-to-60 time. The secret is weighty: the 2,988-pound Boxster achieves a horsepower/weight ratio of 0.122 versus just 0.095 for the 3,826-pound SL. Small and light is almost always the best road to top performance, a lesson Porsche has learned well.

Transmission

The Porsche can be purchased with a 6-speed manual transmission, but if you want faster shifting, you’ll choose the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic, arguably the best transmission on the planet. It is impossible to shift manually as quickly as the PDK, even if you are a race driver. The SL has a 9-speed automatic. It’s good, but not as good as the Porsche’s

Safety

Both cars offer the same collection of airbags: driver, passenger, driver knee, front head curtain, front knee, and front side. The Porsche comes standard with a rearview camera, electronic stability control rollover protection system, traction control, brake assist, daytime running lights, auto-leveling headlights, and front and rear parking sensors, with available blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The SL offers similar features.
